What are Dental Implants?
Implants are a permanent procedure that replaces the root of a tooth with a metal anchor that becomes fused with the skull or jawbone. An abutment is attached to the anchor and a crown is attached to the abutment. And while this sounds like it might be painful, most patients find it less painful than a regular tooth extraction.
Implants are a far more permanent solution to bridges or crowns if a tooth is badly damaged or fractured beyond repair. In fact, some patients use implants as anchors for their bridges because of their strong and permanent hold. Implants are ideal for patients who have lost teeth and are considering bridges and/or dentures as replacements. Implants look and feel just like your original teeth.
There’s no doubt, dental implants by Dr. Krusich will restore your smile, appearance, and your confidence.
Advantages & Disadvantages of Implants
Advantages of Implants
- Implants look and feel like real teeth.
- Dental implants are fused into your bone for a permanent solution.
- Implants, while rated for 10-years or more, in many cases end up lasting a lifetime.
Disadvantages of Implants
- No doubt cost is a major factor.
- Implants take longer. Time of start of the implant to the final setting can be up to 6 months.
What to Expect With Implants
Dr. Krusich can provide a consultation in our Overland Park office to determine if implants are right for you. He needs to make sure your bone and gums are healthy to support the implant. Also certain conditions like smoking, cancer radiation treatments, and even diabetes can impact if one is a good candidate for implants. The team at Krusich Dental prepares a comprehensive treatment plan outlining each step along the way. If everyone agrees to proceed with implants, here’s what you can expect with the implant procedure.
- An anchor is set in the tooth root cavity. In 6 to 12-weeks, the bone grows around the anchor to properly secure it. This is done by a specialist; either a Periodontist or an Oral Surgeon.
- After the anchor sets, a mold of your mouth is created so Dr. Krusich and an external lab can see exactly how your teeth fit together. From this mold, the external lab creates your crowns that will attach to the abutments.
Insurance and Dental Implants
In most cases, dental implants are _not_ covered by insurance though some high-end policies may cover them depending upon the underlying reason for tooth loss. It is best to work with our insurance coordinator to determine exactly what benefits your insurance may cover.
There is no doubt that dental implants are one of the more expensive dental procedures at a cost of upwards of $4000 a tooth. However, with proper care, they can also last a lifetime. Dr. Krusich works with Care Credit to help finance dental procedures–including dental implants.
